Order Has Been Restored

"But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way." ~ 1 Corinthians 14:40

I love routine. The crazy chaos of summer with kids and dogs and sports and travel is fun, until it's not. My kids are attending a new school this year--as in new, never existed, inaugural year of students. To finish the building and better train the teachers and staff, our summer break got extended two weeks beyond the rest of the schools in the area. We celebrated and scoffed at our poor friends who had to go back to school on August 17. That first extra week was fun having the neighborhood pool to ourselves and seeing the school bus drive by the house while we were still in pajamas.

Then came the second bonus week of summer. My job got busier, the kids were tired of spending all their time with just each other and the bickering over who's turn it was to sit shotgun and how many pieces of gum are acceptable to chew at once became daily fights. (Apparently one piece of Trident Layers is good, but two is better. If there are three pieces left in the pack and I have two children, we have a mathematical problem and fractions are not an acceptable solution.)

Finally, September 1 arrived! Order was restored to the House of Sparks and I couldn't be more content. As I look at my big desk calendar page today--yep, I love humongous calendars that I can write on with an actual pencil and see a whole month at once--I see that each week has the consistent rhythm that summer was missing. Repetition and routine are good, at least for a girl like me who enjoys everything being in it's proper place.
